But it’s an ongoing process, and we are here to help if your goals adapt or your situation changes. What is investment planning?

Whether you already have cash on hand, you’ve just inherited a lump sum or you’re simply thinking about the wealth you hope to accumulate in the future, investment planning is crucial to making your money work for you.

It’s about marrying your assets with your goals – finding a way to boost your wealth in a way that will give you the lifestyle, opportunities and legacy that you want. So if it’s thinking about university fees for your children, preparing for a comfortable retirement or maximising what you leave for your loved ones, investment planning gives you the best chance to achieve your goals.

How do I start an investment portfolio?

There are several factors you need to take into account, but one of the most important is your attitude to risk. Broadly speaking, the longer-term your goals are, the more risk you can afford to take.

You should also think about what sorts of things you want in your portfolio, be it ISAs, stocks and shares, bonds and gilts, commodities or property.

This might all sound daunting, but we are here to help you.

How do I grow my investments?

This is where we come in. We have the expertise and experience to talk you through your options and help you find the right home for your money. Investing is different from speculating. Investing is a long-term process, enabling your money to grow over a period of time rather than simply trying to find a short-term boost. Of course, you might get lucky if you speculate, but the benefit of a well-planned investment portfolio is that any short-term dips are smoothed by long-term growth.

By combining your personal ambitions with our expertise, you’ll be maximising the chances of seeing your investments blossom.

What does an investment manager do?

The first thing we do is get to know you, and get to understand your plans and ambitions. We then talk you through your options and work with you to find the best way to realise those ambitions.

There will be a continual two-way dialogue. You’ll receive regular updates on how your investments are doing, and we are always on hand to discuss how you might want to tweak your investments and guide you through how we can help if your circumstances or goals change.

Starting a family, moving to a new job or changing career, setting up a business, and receiving an inheritance are just some of the things that can impact how you manage your wealth, and we are here to help you at every step of the way.

We can assist with planning for your retirement, financial protection, growing your portfolio, reducing your inheritance tax liabilities and planning what happens to your wealth after you’ve gone.

The value of an investment with St. James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief is generally dependent on individual circumstances.

How we can help

Our investment planning advice services are designed to help grow wealth and protect against inflation.

Individual Savings Account (ISAs)
ISAs are a tax-efficient way to save, and you can use them to put away up to £20,000 a year. Although ISAs don’t offer guaranteed returns, we use some of the world’s leading investment professionals to manage our ISA funds – and all the growth you enjoy is tax-free.
Junior ISAs
Junior ISAs – which allow contributions of up to £9,000 a year – are for people aged under 18. As with regular ISAs, all investment returns are free of tax, and this helps set up the next generation, who benefit from the knowledge of our world-class investment professionals.
Unit Trusts
The portfolio of assets in a unit trust might include property, bonds and shares – and if it forms part of an ISA, all returns are tax-free. Looked after by a professional fund manager, it can be suitable if you’re looking for medium or long-term capital growth and income.
Investment Bonds
These are long-term products which allow investors to spread risk and make it easy to switch between funds. Our bond gives you access to a wide range of asset classes, allows you to address your income or growth plans, and can help with tax planning.
Investing for Income
With interest still at rock bottom, we look elsewhere to generate ongoing income from your assets. Our expertise and ability to diversify can help build you a portfolio designed to maximise your income, with assets including bonds and gilts, shares and commercial property.
Investing for Growth
We have the knowledge and experience to help your investments perform in line with your financial goals. We offer a choice of six growth portfolios: they have varying degrees of risk, ranging from defensive through to adventurous, but they are all designed to help your assets grow.
